Spring on MARs

Warmer weather has finally arrived here in Muskoka, which means that the spring racing season has also begun. To kick it off, MARs had an incredible showing in Toronto and Mississauga this past weekend, with over fifteen members heading south to participate.

At the Mississauga Marathon, Brian Gray led the way in a time of 3:37:25, qualifying himself for the Boston Marathon. Next were Erin Gaughan and Sharon Bennett, running 3:41:45 and 3:44:58, respectively, with Jane Wolfe not far behind in 3:54:36. Congratulations to these runners on their PRs (all of which were BQ times!).

Also in the full was Chris Near, running his first marathon well under four hours, as well as Mel Mar, finishing with an incredible attitude despite some setbacks. Way to go, runners!

In the half marathon, more PRs were set by Katie Barkey (1:37:40 – so you all can stop hassling me), Tannis Wettlaufer (1:53:19), Stacey Tinkler (2:02:24) and Sarah Steele (2:08:53). Congrats, ladies!

Meanwhile in Toronto, the Big T/Lil T duo posted another year of impressive results, along with Tony the Runner in the half as well and Doug Neudorf in the full. First in from MARs (act surprised) was Troy ‘Big T’ Cox in 1:16:33, finishing 5th overall and 1st master, for the fifth year in a row. Right behind Troy was Chris ‘Lil T’ Watson in 1:18:52 as 13th overall and 5th master. Both Troy and Chris won their age categories, I just won’t say what they are (you two can thank me later).

Also in the half was club favourite Tony Marra, running 1:30:51 and finishing 10th in his age category. All of MARs misses Tony, and looks forward to his and his family’s next appearance in ‘cottage country’ in the near future.

In the full marathon, original MARs member Doug Neudorf finished in a speedy time of 3:13:19. Doug not only qualified himself for Boston by over sixteen minutes, but also placed 5th of 114 in his age category. Way to run, Doug!

Speaking of Boston, a special mention must be made for Rebecca Francis, who represented MARs at the Boston Marathon in April. While braving torrential downpour and unforgiving headwind, Reba ran an inspiring 3:34:14, qualifying for next year’s race. You are amazing, Reba!

Congratulations to all of these runners and thank you to the friends and family who made the trip to support them. We look forward to sharing more results from the Ottawa Marathon, along with other spring races, in the coming weeks and months.

As for regular happenings, Tuesday and Thursday morning workouts continue, with various events and runs throughout the week. Check TeamSnap for details.

See you on the roads!
