Muskoka Algonquin Runners continued a stellar season en route to the Canadian Cross Running Championships In Kingston November 28, competing at the Athletics Ontario Cross Country Championships at Etobicoke’s Centennial Park today. The team was represented by a record twenty one runners, with many outstanding individual and team results.
Leading the way once more were Troy Cox and Katherine Ahokas. Big T finished 4th overall in the Masters race with nearly 300 runners, was 2nd in his 45-49 age group and was the leader of his men’s 40-49 team. Katherine was the third overall woman today in the Master’s race, and 1st in the 30-34 age group. This is especially impressive considering that just over a month ago Katherine ran a smoking fast marathon in Victoria.Other impressive individual results included Chris Watson’s 8th overall and 3rd in the Masters Men’s 40-44 age group; Helen Dempster, Jess Sheppard, Mary Unsworth and Bob Wild were all 2nd in their respective age groups (W40-44, W30-34,W35-39 and M80-84) and Melissa Kosowan was 3rd in the Women’s 30-34.
The team results were equally impressive. The Men’s 40-49 team remained undefeated this year, taking on both powerhouses The Newmarket Huskies and The University of Toronto Track Club. Led by Troy Cox and Chris Watson the team placed 4th,8th,19th (Mark Sinnige) and 26th (Pierre Mikhail). The men are hoping tho carry this momentum with them to Kingston, but expect some serious competition.
In the men’s 30-39 age group, Tony Marra and Roger Penney accepted the challenge of running down a decade to join Dan Quigg in the team 30-39 event, placing second overall.
The women’s teams were spectacular with the 30-39 team of Kat Ahokas, Mary Unsworth, Jess Sheppard and Melissa Kosowan winning gold and the 40-49 team of Helen Dempster, Tina Steele, Sandra O’Dell and Catherine Smith placing third.
For the first time ever MARS entered an Open (Senior) Men’s team of Kip Arlidge, Josh Stevens, Brian Moore, and Orion Austrup.
Finally, we were all in awe of Bob Wild, continuing to race well into his 80s and placing an age group second. Congratulations Bob!
