MARS News

There is a lot going on in the MARS running community right now.

The Huntsville Hoyas will send off 20 runners, parents and supporters to Sudbury this Friday for OFSAA XC Championships.  Go Hoyas!

On Sunday November 3, MARS Masters Runners will tackle the Sunnybrook 8 Km XC event.  Same day registration permitted.  Contact Pierre if you need a ride.  We will depart at 9:15 am and should be back around 5 pm.  Daylights Savings is Saturday night so you can sleep in AND go to the race!

MARS is sending both young and old runners to the Athletics Ontario XC Championships November 17 just outside of London.  Contact us for details or click here.

Registration for the MARS road trip to the Vermont City Marathon opens November 1 (Friday).  If you would rather tackle the 1/2 Marathon, there is a Marathon relay and registration for that opens Feb. 1, 2014.  Why not book your hotel now, as you can always cancel later.  Burlington, Vermont is beautiful.  Race details can be found here.

MARS is looking for ways to engage more runners.  We will host our first “Run To The Pub” Thursday November 28 from 4:30-5:30 pm.  Come for a run then a drink/food at the pub.  We will meet in River Mill Park at 4:30 and head to the pub around 5:30pm.  The Club Executive will meet for a half hour and everyone can mingle.  If you have ideas for MARS, bring them with you or contact us.

Finally, tune up your head lamps and join us tomorrow morning at 6:30 am for the “Run For The Doug 5 Km Time Trial”.  We will jog the 5 km course first then race it.  Pack your excuses away for winter (it’s too cold, it’s too dark, it’s too early).  See you there.

MARS / HOYAS KICK DOWN STRAIGHTAWAY!

It was another busy week in the world of Cross Country running.  MARS held two hard workouts this past week, mile repeats and a 5km time trial.  Join us again this Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 am (rain or shine or snow) at Conroy Track.  On Tuesday we will be doing 200m Anaerobic Capacity Intervals.  Thursday, we will continue our “Run For The Doug 5 Km Time Trial” series.  We will jog the 5 km course then race it.  Two races remain in the Masters series (age >/= 30): November 3 at Sunnybrook Park in Toronto and November 17 at The Athletics Ontario Cross Country Championships outside of London.  Click here for details. We will be carpooling at 9:15 November 3 and driving down November 16 to London.  We are still looking for more runners to join us!

The Huntsville Hoyas Cross Country Running Team had another successful week last week, winning the MPS (Muskoka Parry Sound) title, with many excellent team and individual results.  The team is tapering for its big race October 23 in Duntroon.   Last year, Huntsville surprised many teams to the south with a second place overall finish (35 teams participate) and a win in both the Senior Boys race and the overall boys team division.  It will be very tough competition this year but the Hoyas are ready to risk everything on Wednesday.

See you out there running!

Each race had between 250 and 400 runners.

As far as team results, there were 128 teams with runners yesterday.  In each race there were roughly thirty teams that had the minimum of 4 scoring runners needed to score as a team.  Huntsville teams placed as follows:  Midget Boys 15th , Midget Girls 11th , Junior Girls 10th , Junior Boys 6th, Senior Girls 3rd, Senior Boys 5th.

The Hoyas have one more week of hard training left ending with MPS Race next Wednesday.  They will then start their taper leading to their big race, GBSAA Championships Wednesday October 23, 2013 at Duntroon.  Congratulations to Huntsville Hoyas for a fantastic season thus far.

Over on the Masters side of things, MARS’ first ever “Run For The Doug 5 Km XC Time Trial” was held this morning at 6:30 am.  Turn out was incredible.  Several of the runners got to meet Doug.  The next Run For The Doug will be Thursday October 17 and 24 at 6:30 am meeting at Conroy Track.  After a 5 km warm up of the course, we will race the course starting at 7:05 am.  The course profile can be seen:  Time Trial Course and Profile

The next Masters XC race is Sunday November 3 at Sunnybrook Park in Toronto at 1pm.  We will carpool from Huntsville at 9:15 am.

Ontario Cross Country Championships are November 17 just outside of London.  MARS has reserved 5 rooms for club members and will travel to London on November 16.

MARS Accelerates into October

MARS XC Season just got super busy.

Many of our runners kicked butt while supporting the Muskoka Mud Run today, in both the 5K and 9K distances.  Congratulations to Andy and Ellen for hosting a fantastic event.

This coming week (after a week off to plan and host and recover from the Hoya Hills Invitational), MARS will be having three morning runs.

On Tuesday morning at 6:30 am at Conroy Park, we will be doing anaerobic intervals (200m repeats, after a good warm up)

On Thursday at 6:30 am at Conroy Park, we will host our first of two 5 Km Time Trials (the second time trial will be Thursday October 17).  We will jog the 5 Km course first then race it.  This is all to get us ready for the final event of our season, the November 17 Ontario Cross Country Championships (5 Km for Masters racers) in London.  The group of us who raced last weekend were like excited teenagers in the car (stinky) on the way home.  Why not join us and get muddy?

Friday morning at 6:45 am there will be an easy run leaving Conroy Track at 6:45 am.

The next Ontario Masters Race series race will be Sunday November 3 at 1 pm at Sunnybrook Park.  We will again carpool departing Huntsville at 9:15 am or so.  For a limited time the club will use funds that Pierre received for coaching at Craftsbury in the summer to pay the $50 Masters Ontario Membership for any runner who decides to enter a race (the races cost $15).  Let us know if you’re interested in this before that money runs out.  We would really like to enter men’s and women’s teams that day.

See you out there running!

Hoya Hills A Success

Congratulations to all the runners and volunteers who made the Hoya Hills Invitational XC Race a huge success yesterday at Arrowhead Provincial Park.  There were over 700 runners participating on a beautiful sunny fall day.

Friday morning’s 6:45 am run will be canceled this week as MARS runners, many of whom helped at the race, are unable to walk currently!

See you back at Conroy Track Tuesday October 8 at 6:45 am!
