Masters Cross Country Details

For those budding Masters Runners (age over 30), here are the details of our fall cross country season, starting with our rules:

Rules: All you require to participate is two feet and a heart, and even those are negotiable.  Why not try something new?  You’ll never experience anything as exciting as a Cross Country race!

Workouts: Beginning Tuesday September 10, we will do a workout 6:30-8 am meeting at Conroy Track.  The workout will be in the area between the track and Camp Kitchen so no one really will ever be too far away.

Easy Runs:  Every Friday at 6:45-7:45 am we will have a group easy run departing from Conroy Track

5Km Time Trials: Most Masters Cross Country Races are 5Km, including the Ontario Championships.  We have scheduled two Time Trials as practice at that distance.  They will be held Thursday October 10 and Thursday October 17.  We will meet at 6:30 am at Conroy Track and jog the route.  Then, at 7 am sharp the Time Trial begins.  There will be prizes!

Races:  The goal race is Sunday November 17 at Ontario Cross Country Championships.  This sounds intimidating but in the Masters category a whole range of abilities participate and no qualification is necessary.  The distance is 5Km. Information on the event will follow this fall.  The other races MARS would like to participate in are:

1. Sunday September 29 at 1 pm at Taylor Creek in Toronto, 5Km

2. Muskoka Mud Run 5 or 9 Km, Saturday October 5, Bracebridge

3. Sunday November 3 at 1 pm at Sunnybrook Park, Toronto, 8Km

For information about races 1. and 3. go to  As the races approach, the registration information appears at the site.  MARS would drive down the same day to these two events.

See you out there running.

High School Members Rock Some Watermelon at Craftsbury Camp

Summer may be ending but the fun is just beginning if you like running through mud.

The high school XC season starts in 10 days as does a parallel season for Masters cross country runners (age over 30) in Ontario.

Come out and see what this is all about.

This week on Tuesday and Thursday, all club members are welcome to join us 5:30-7 pm at Conroy Track for a workout.  If you have not been running, we will not leave you behind, as we do all of our workouts in a fairly close area.

The last summer afternoon run is Thursday August 29.   We will take a break the week of September 2 and restart our MARS runs the week of September 9.  We will offer a Tuesday 6:30-8 am Cross Country workout and a Friday morning 6:45-7:45 am easy run through the fall.

All details will appear at the Calendar tab.  Please check the calendar before attending a run in case of cancellations (rare!).

See you there!

Thursday MARS Hit The Track

Come out this Thursday and hit the track with Muskoka Algonquin Runners.

It’s time to stop procrastinating. Lace up those runners, and show up at 5:30 at Conroy Track. Bring a water bottle. All levels of runner are always welcome.

Stay tuned for the MARS Marathon Challenge…….

August Update

Summer is slowly winding down but MARS still has a busy August.

Fartlek Tuesdays continue with a great workout today, 5:30-7 pm, meeting at Conroy Track.  Come and sweat with us, all levels of runner welcome.  Bring a water bottle with water.

The field trip to the MEC race in Oro-Medonte has been canceled due to lack of interest.  Any runners wishing to attend the race can still attend on their own.

A great way to kick start your fall running season is to consider running the Run For  A Way (5Km/10Km/Half Marathon) September 1 at Santa’s Village in Bracebridge.  Information available at the website

Finally, the fabulous Muskoka Mud Run is taking place Saturday October 5.  The fee for high school students is very reasonable but goes up $2 on August 25.  Details can be found at  Adult registration costs more but is still very reasonable.

See you out there running!

Tempo Thursday

Today will be a perfect day in Muskoka!

Why not finish it off by joining Muskoka Algonquin Runners at 5:30 pm for a workout?

Today we will be doing a warm up, some running drills and a tempo workout. No one gets left behind and the workout is easily adjusted for all levels of runner.

See you there at Conroy Track 5:30 sharp. We will be finished at 7 pm.

Dog Days of Summer

MARS is entering the dog days of summer.  If your motivation is flagging, now is the time to join us for a workout Tuesday and Thursday next week.

On Tuesday August 13 we will be doing a Fartlek run and on Thursday August 15 we will be doing a tempo run. It doesn’t matter if you have no idea what these are, we will explain it in detail.

We will meet in the parking area of Conroy Track both days at 5:30 pm sharp and will finish there at 7 pm.

We welcome you regardless of your fitness level, as long as you are a club member (details on membership found at Membership tab of our website).

If you are a high school runner, now is the time to start running if you haven’t begun already.

Pass it on!

See last post for details regarding an early season race September 14 in Oro-Medonte.  If there is enough interest by August 30 we will rent a bus as outlined in the last post.  MEC (race organizers) will bring our numbers to the race if we register online (ie you do not have to drive to Barrie to pick up your race entry).

MARS Field Trip Addendum

MARS is planning to make our field trip more accessible to all by going to a different race in Oro-Medonte rather than the 5Peaks race in Brampton.

The bus ride will be only 75 minutes and we would not have to depart until around 7 am and would return by 1 pm.  The race distances are 5/10/15Km (you choose).  It is not cross country but it is still a good early season race to get you in the groove.  The race cost is much more reasonable at $15 per entry regardless of distance.

The plan will be to charge $10 for the bus for adults.  High school students do not have to pay for the bus.

To register, go to  There are 280 spots left for the race.  Contact MARS to reserve a spot on the bus.
