Congratulations to Huntsville Hoyas!

Several Huntsville Hoya athletes qualified for the OFSAA Regionals yesterday. Leading the way were Ben Forestell and Ryley Atwood.  Ben ran a smoking fast 800m in 2:01:92, placing 9th.  Ryley had an impressive result in the 3000m, placing 4th overall and qualifying for the OFSAA Championships June 8, 2013.  Ryley ran a 10:38.13.

Congratulations to Ryley and Ben!

Summer Running

We’ve had a fair amount of feedback regarding summer runs.  Because we hope to have many high school runners joining us this summer, and because teenagers aren’t famous for waking up early, we are going to move our Tuesday runs from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm beginning Tuesday July 9.  If you are ever not sure, simply go to the Calendar tab at the website.  The run leader, details of run and location will be listed clearly.  As well, we will try to keep these workouts in the area around the track, the University of Waterloo and the Camp Kitchen, so that runners of all abilities can benefit.

The run days until July 9 are as follows:

Tuesday Mornings 6:30-8:00 am Conroy Track

Sunday Mornings 9 am River Mill Park 9 am

Beginning Tuesday July 9 the run times will be:

Tuesday Afternoons 5:30-7:00 pm Conroy Track

Thursday Afternoons 5:30-7:00 pm Conroy Track

Sunday Mornings 9 am TBA (consult calendar for location that day)

Muskoka Algonquin Runners Hit The Track

Now that (slightly) warmer weather has hit, there’s no excuse for not running.

Why not join us for a track workout this Tuesday at 6:30 am at the Conroy Track?

The great thing about track workouts is that runners of all abilities can be together, and no one is left behind.

Here is what we are planning:

15-20 min warm up
8-10 x 800m intervals with 2:30 recovery jog (but if you are a newbie, you can of course do less)
15-20 min warm down.

These intervals are called Yasso 800s, named after Bart Yasso.  For marathoners who have executed a training plan, it is a marathon prediction workout…….your time in minutes and seconds translates into your predicted time in hours and minutes (some say + 5 minutes).

No matter who you are, there is value in doing speed work.

See you there.

PS Now that Arrowhead Park is open the Sunday 9 am runs will start from River Mill Park, with coffee at Nutty Chocolatier afterwards

Muskoka Algonquin Runner News

There has been a great deal of action in the Muskoka running community this spring.

Runners have raced (Around the Bay, Yonge Street 10K, Sporting Life 10K, Toronto Marathon and Half Marathon).

Runners have trained for future races (Band on the Run, high school track season, etc)

Runners continue to meet Tuesday mornings at 6:30 am and Sunday mornings at 9:00 am.

Good luck to all high school runners heading to GBSAA Track and Field Finals Wednesday May 22, 2013.  This is a qualifying race for the OFSAA Regionals.  Go Hoyas!

Don’t forget you can buy MARS gear at The Sportlab (Tech Shirts $25, Hats $15, Singlets $27).

Our friends at The Limberlost Challenge have offered us four free entries for their July 13 race.  Two entries are reserved for teenagers.  To qualify for a chance to win these entries simply attend 4 MARS runs between April 2 and the end of May.  The runs are Tuesdays 6:30-7:30 am (meeting at Conroy Track) and Sundays 9 am (meeting at Arrowhead Park lower gates). Once you have attended four runs, contact us through the Contact tab at this website and let us know.  We will draw the four winners June 1 and then let you know.

We are looking for anyone interested in running an aid station at Band on the Run.  It’s an easy job, a great way to participate in the run even if you can’t run.

Finally, the club is looking for runners interested in being the “in charge runner” at workouts in the summer beginning July 8, Tuesdays (6:30-8:00 am), Thursdays(5:30-7:00 pm) and Sundays(9:00-10:30 am).  Head to the Calendar Tab to see what dates already have a  leader.  If you live on the water and want to share a dip with other runners, sign up for a Sunday.  Runners will bring their own eats.

See you on the roads.

Muskoka Runners Join 27,000 at Sporting Life 10K

Eleven Huntsville runners joined 27,000 running down Yonge Street in Toronto today at The Sporting Life 10K.

The race raises money for a local Muskoka summer camp, Camp Oochigeas. Camp Oochigeas, located near Rosseau, offers year round programs for children affected by childhood cancer.

Our runners were lead by Jeffery Hoover and Roger Penney, who completed the race in 35:19 and 39:07 respectively, on a windy, cold day.

Also competing were two Huntsville Hoya high school runners. Shannon Marshall and Sarah Steele.

Other local competitors in the race were Tina Steele, Adam and Sarah Caswell, Nicole Howell, Nancy Price, Denise Penney, and Kelly Gates.

Congratulations to all our local runners.

The club continues to meet this Tuesday (May 14) at Conroy Track at 6:30 am. This week we will be doing mile repeats on the track.

Muskoka Algonquin Runners Kick Butt in Toronto!

It was a great day for local runners at the Goodlife Toronto Marathon and Half Marathon.

In the marathon event, Troy Cox placed 7th overall and 1st in his age category, running the race in just over 2 hours and 47 minutes.

In the half marathon, just under 6000 runners participated.  Our club’s women lead the way with Katherine Ahokas placing 60th overall and 1st in her age category.  Helen Dempster placed 86th overall and again was 1st in her age category.  High schooler Karlene Horsfield placed 31st in her age category.

Pierre Mikhail placed 32nd overall and 7th in his age category and Terri Tebby also completed the race.

Three age category 1st place finishes, four age category top 10 finishes and one 7th place overall is an amazing day for Muskoka Runners!

Congrats to our local runners!

Good Luck To Marathoners and Half Marathoners

Muskoka Algonquin Runners wishes good luck to all local runners competing in this Sunday’s Goodlife Toronto Marathon and Half Marathon.

Not racing this weekend? Why not come join us at 9 am Sunday at Arrowhead Provincial Park lower gates for a run?

Don’t forget to join the club. Technical shirts and running hats can be purchased at The Sportlab in Huntsville.
